Sydney New Years fireworks are often heralded as the best New Year's Eve celebrations in the world and it's not hard to see why. Every year over a million people gather around Sydney Harbour (that's more people than in Times Square) to see the spectacular fireworks display that lights up the sky for miles around.
The centrepiece of the celebrations is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Every year, visitors are dazzled by the shower of fireworks launched from the bridge and the golden curtain of light created beneath it.
But there is more to the Sydney New Years celebrations than just the midnight fireworks. The party officially begins at 1pm with the firing of the Fort Dennison cannon. Then, throughout the afternoon party-goers are treated to various formation fly-overs and displays.
As night settles in, an Indigenous Welcome ceremony is performed on Sydney Harbour. It is a ritual of purification and unity.
At 9pm, the family fireworks begin and are followed by the Harbour of Light Parade. The family fireworks give families with young children and anyone who does not want to stay out until midnight a chance to see the fireworks and join in the festivities.
The Harbour of Light Parade features over 50 boats including Sydney's Heritage Fleet, Tall Ships, Sydney Ferries, charter boats and private vessels. They follow a 15km circuit around the harbour and each features an illuminated emblem to represent this year's theme. If you want to be a part of the parade, you will need to purchase a ticket on board one of the charter boats participating in the parade.
The festivities culminate with the magnificent fireworks display at midnight. Every year the display gets bigger, more sophisticated and more impressive. The 2007/8 spectacular will be the largest and most complex fireworks display on record. No wonder Sydney-siders love Sydney New Years!
